CCIE ROUTING & SWITCHING

CCIE Routing and Switching certification is designed for network managers, professionals, senior network engineers and architects who are responsible for implementing and troubleshooting today’s complex converged networks in enterprise networking environments.

This expert-level certification recognizes knowledge and experience in network infrastructure technologies. CCIE Routing and Switching validates the technical expertise required for implementing and troubleshooting complex networks and helps improve network uptime, increases user productivity and provides business agility.

Certification Step One: Written Exam

The first step towards certification is a two-hour written exam with 90-110 questions that will validate your expertise in foundational networking topics, as well as an Evolving Technologies section that will test your knowledge of emerging technologies such as cloud, IoT and software defined networking.

Certification Step Two: Lab Exam

The CCIE lab exam is a hands-on exam lasting eight hours which will test your ability to configure and troubleshoot a variety of network topologies to provided specifications, using real-world equipment. To complete your certification, the lab exam must be passed within three years of passing your written exam, with your first attempt made within the first 18 months.

Exams

The CCIE Routing and Switching Certification requires candidates to pass two exams: the written exam and the lab-based exam.

Exam 1: 400-101 CCIE Routing & Switching Written

Exam Number: 400-101
Associated Certifications: CCIE Routing & Switching
Duration: 120 minutes (90-110 questions)
Available Languages: English

Exam Description

The Cisco CCIE Routing and Switching Written Exam will validate that professionals have the expertise to: configure, validate, and troubleshoot complex enterprise network infrastructure; understand how infrastructure components interoperate; and translate functional requirements into specific device configurations. The exam is closed book and no outside reference materials are allowed.

An Evolving Technologies section is included in the Written exam only. It will enable candidates to bridge their core technology expertise with knowledge of the evolving technologies that are being adopted at an accelerated pace, such as cloud, IoT, and network programmability.

Exam 2:  CCIE Routing & Switching Lab

Exam Number: Not Applicable
Associated Certifications: CCIE Routing & Switching
Duration: 8 Hours to Complete 3 Sections

Exam Description

The CCIE lab exam is an eight-hour, hands-on exam which requires you to configure and troubleshoot a series of complex networks to given specifications. Knowledge of troubleshooting is an important skill and candidates are expected to diagnose and solve issues as part of the CCIE lab exam. You will not configure end-user systems, but are responsible for all devices residing in the network (hubs, etc.). Point values and testing criteria are provided.

Lab Environment

The Cisco documentation is available in the lab room, but the exam assumes knowledge of the more common protocols and technologies. The documentation can be navigated using the index. No outside reference materials are permitted in the lab room. You must report any suspected equipment issues to the proctor during the exam; adjustments cannot be made once the exam is over.

Lab Exam Grading

The labs are graded by proctors who ensure that all the criteria have been met. They will use automatic tools to gather data from the routers in order to perform preliminary evaluations.  Candidates must reach a minimum threshold in all three sections and achieve an overall passing score.

Lab Format

The CCIE Routing and Switching Lab exam consists of a 2 hour Troubleshooting section, a 30 minute Diagnostic section, and a 5 hour and 30 minute Configuration section.  Candidates may choose to borrow up to 30 minutes from the Configuration section and use it in the Troubleshooting section.

Prerequisites

Cisco does not require any formal prerequisites for CCIE certification. Other professional certifications or training courses are not required. However, it is usually recommended that Engineers gain enough experience to be considered at the Professional (CCNP) level of expertise before attempting their CCIE certification exams.
